Many of us prefer to shower our pets with care and affection, but unfortunately, there are some bad animal owners out there, proving that certain people should never be near animals for their own safety.
One of those people was Chunk's owner, a lovely three-month-old dog who had lost all of her vigour and vigor. Her owner has been harsh to her since she was born. They simply abandoned her on the side of the road, fastened to a tree so she couldn't escape after three months.
The poor puppy was abandoned in the rain, obviously terrified and wondering what she could possibly have done wrong. Fortunately, even if it was by chance, the local fire department spotted the imprisoned puppy. On a cold October day in Sacramento, a member of the department saved Chunk just in time.
They were responding to an emergency call when they noticed the four-footer by the side of the road. Because it was an emergency, the crew couldn't just go; they had to return once their call was resolved.
The harsh weather was very hard on her; the firemen recall how the poor tiny critter was completely shivering due to the cold. Mike Thawley, a firefighter, elected to take baby Chunk under his wing and bring her back to the fire station. Mike and his colleagues did everything they could to give this poor dog some much-needed love and care.
Because she was still quite chilly, the first thing they did was provide her a warm bath, which was followed by numerous embraces and cuddles from the firemen.
She wasn't just sick with the flu; it was clear from the start that she was dealing with severe mange. It is not uncommon to see the skin problem in dogs who have been mistreated or abused by their owners. Chunk received initial aid from the fire station before being transported to an animal shelter for extra treatment and the hope of one day finding a loving permanent home.
The Front Street Animal Shelter took her in to cure her mange and ensure her entire recovery. A foster home was also formed where she could stay until she felt better. It did take some time for her fur to grow back, and Chunk's recovery did not go as smoothly as they had hoped.
While Chunk was spending her days in the shelter or in her foster home, one individual couldn't stop thinking about her. Firefighter Mike Thawley surprised everyone when he returned to the shelter. The pitbull certainly didn't forget who this person was, and you can see how happy she is to see her saviour again.
"We all just sort of fell in love with her," the Sacramento Fire Department wrote on Facebook.
Mike did not come to the shelter alone; he was accompanied by his wife and three daughters. And they were there for a reason! The fireman and his family were eager to care for her indefinitely.
"Although Mike disputes it, it looks by a vote of four to one that Chunk could end up with a permanent home!" The post concludes with a grin.
Firefighter Mike Thawley and his family visited the Front Street Animal Shelter today. The gang had gathered to welcome foster puppy Chunk home. Mike and the rest of the team rescued Chunk from Engine 14 last Sunday, and he has been recovering at the shelter. Despite Mike's denials, it appears that Chunk will be given a permanent home by a four-to-one vote! Thank you to Bobby Mann and the whole Front Street Animal Shelter crew for your unwavering commitment to our neighborhood.
Mike and his family had to wait four months for her mange treatment to be finished before they could take her home, but they were all overjoyed to finally be able to adopt her.
One of the staff members at the shelter, Bobby Mann, said, "I think what's fantastic about this whole story is that not only did this dog get its forever home, but got the chance to go to a foster home, which we're always searching for at our shelter, to become happy and healthy."
