It's not uncommon for SAW's welfare officers to save multiple dogs at the same time, but they're used to seeing rescued bonded street pups become more self-sufficient.
The staff could tell that these two had a particular relationship right away.
"They travelled who knows how far," Ashlie Jerkes, one of SAW's animal welfare officers, told The Dodo, "but they always stayed together."The officers welcomed the couple with open arms and gave them the nickname Bonnie and Clyde. Even at the shelter, they refused to leave each other's side.
"They served their stray hold in the same kennel together, where they seemed pretty close," Jerkes told me to this day.
For the next three days, the two dogs nestled together as they decompressed and got medical attention. Despite their continuous battle with heartworm, Bonnie and Clyde were eventually strong enough to be considered for adoption.
When they were separated on the adoption floor for a short while, the two best friends couldn't wait to see each other again.
"When we gave them outside time, they would just run together," Jerkes told me at the time.
Bonnie soon found herself alone in the shelter, while Clyde was adopted by a wonderful family.
The heartbroken girl quickly missed her closest friend, and she began to lose faith in her happily-ever-after.
One day, a welfare officer snapped a photo of her laying face-down on her cot and posted it to the shelter's social media in the hopes of finding her a family.
On Facebook, she wrote, "Bonnie is all alone since her bother got adopted, and she definitely misses having a sibling to cuddle with."
Fortunately, their wish came true sooner than expected.
"That was posted on Friday, and someone came in first thing Monday morning to adopt her," Jerkes continued.
Bonnie has finally found her dream home, and she is overjoyed.
"She's already settling in!" Bonnie's new mother, Brayden Routh, wrote in a Facebook comment. "She's going to have the best life, full of adventures with her blue heeler-mix big sis."
Bonnie was only recently adopted, but her new family treats her as if she's been with them forever.
And, while Bonnie will always have loving memories of her brother Clyde, she is enthusiastic about the adventures that await her.
