A college student spends the entire night holding a dying sanctuary dog in her arms so that the dog would not pass away alone

As much as we want to rescue and give to every homeless animal we see, the sad reality is that not all suffering creatures can be saved. Unfortunately, this is what Janine Guido, the founder of Speranza Animal Rescue, had to accept when she first met Watson.

Watson, a famished and homeless Pit Bull, was saved by a college student after they discovered him alone in a Philadelphia park. The student rushed the poor puppy to the emergency veterinarian. He was covered with sores all over his body. He also has a huge tumour developing on his back leg. Unfortunately, Watson's time was running out, and the vet informed the college student that there was little chance for him because his cancer had spread.

Watson was then taken to a local shelter, where personnel pledged to make him as comfortable as possible during his remaining time.

"I had a gut feeling that things weren't going to be good the next day," Guido told The Dodo. "I did not want to leave him alone. "Not when he needed me the most."

Guido then offered to remain by Watson's side. She got him blankets and a dog bed, then lay down with him and cuddled him tight. Guido spent the entire night holding Watson in her arms.

"He slept like a rock all night, cuddled up to me so tight," Guido commented. "I cried myself to sleep, and woke up in tears as well."

The next morning, Watson refused to eat or drink. He also started pacing in circles, which was when Guido realised the end was approaching. She continued to give him love and care, ensuring that he was not alone.

Watson died not long after, but at least he knew he was loved.

"I'm just so thankful I was able to hold him tight for his last night," he said. "I was telling him how much he was loved — and that his life was important. "My heart is breaking, but I wouldn't change anything."

Rest in peace, little Watson. And may this story serve as a lesson to all of us to always do our part to aid animals who do not have a loving home.
